Eco-Friendly Ganpati FAQs

Quick answer: Devta makes eco-friendly Ganesh idols from Shadu Mati (natural Konkan clay), Paper Lagda (upcycled paper-mache), plantable Tree Ganesha and Cow Dung (Gomaya) — with no Plaster of Paris and only organic, water-soluble pigments. Most murtis dissolve at home in a bucket in about two hours. Below you will find answers on materials, paint safety, sizes, custom orders, export packaging, booking timelines and home visarjan.

Compiled and reviewed by Founder & CEO Er. Tushar Talari, who leads the engineer-led Talari family workshop, with the Devta artisan team in Sion, Mahul and Alibaug.

What materials are used in Devta eco-friendly Ganpati idols?

We make our eco-friendly Ganesh murtis from natural, biodegradable materials and use no Plaster of Paris (PoP). The options are upcycled Paper Lagda (paper-mache pulp with organic tapioca-starch glue), traditional riverbed Shadu Mati (natural Konkan clay), seed-embedded soil and coco-peat (Tree Ganesha), and purified Cow Dung (Gomaya). They are bound and painted only with organic, water-soluble pigments derived from turmeric, red soil and leaf extracts.

How long does it take for a Devta idol to dissolve during visarjan?

Because they are made from natural clay or paper pulp with no PoP, our pure Paper Lagda and Shadu Mati murtis dissolve in a domestic bucket, tub or garden pot in approximately two hours (brochure/observed figure). Our purified Gomaya (Cow Dung) idols dissolve even faster — observed in under 30 minutes — turning into organic compost. Dissolving time varies with idol size and water volume. See our home eco-visarjan guide for a step-by-step method.

Do Devta Ganesha idols really glow in the dark? Is it safe?

Yes, our decorated series uses mineral-based pigments that absorb ambient room light and give a soft glow in dark rooms. Devta positions these as a decorative option; please confirm the current material details with us before booking.

How do you ensure idols do not break during international shipping?

Our Paper Lagda (Paper Mache) idols are lightweight and damage-resistant, which helps them withstand transit vibration. For export markets such as the USA, Canada, UK and Dubai, each idol is multi-layered in protective bubble wrap, secured inside heavy-duty cardboard boxes, and placed in customs-compliant fumigated solid wooden crates. This packaging process is designed to reduce transit damage. Read more on our wholesale & export page.

What is the difference between Paper Mache (Paper Lagda) and Shadu Mati idols?

The main differences are weight, fragility and recommended use. Shadu Mati is traditional natural clay — heavier and more fragile — while Paper Lagda is upcycled paper-mache that is far lighter and transit-safe.

Are the paints used safe for home plants and gardens?

Our murtis are painted with organic, water-soluble pigments derived from turmeric, red soil, sandalwood and leaf extracts, bound with vegetable-based natural starch glue, and use no PoP or chemical/oil paints. Because the residue is natural clay or paper pulp with these organic pigments, it is lower-impact than PoP residue, and the company describes the leftover water and pulp as suitable to pour onto home garden or balcony plants.

Do you supply eco-friendly idols for large Mandals or housing societies?

Yes, we craft grand Paper Lagda (Paper Mache) Ganesha idols in 36, 48 and 60 inch (up to 5 feet) sizes for housing societies, apartment blocks, corporate lobbies and Ganpati mandals. Being ultra-lightweight and durable, they can be safely moved and dissolved in an inflatable tub at the mandap site, avoiding public water immersion queues. See our wholesale & export options for bulk society orders.

What is Startup India recognition and how does it verify your claims?

Devta Kalakendra Private Limited is recognized as a startup by the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India (issue date 28/06/2023). This Government of India recognition supports our green manufacturing model and rural micro-livelihood work through our artisan units in Sion and Alibaug. How can I book an idol online, and what are the payment/delivery timelines?

You can browse our detailed digital showcase, select your preferred material and size, and fill out our Pre-Order Enquiry Form. The form automatically compiles your specific custom requirements and redirects you to confirm instantly with our CEO on WhatsApp. For local Mumbai deliveries, orders are dispatched 7 to 10 days before Ganesh Chaturthi. For international exports, bookings close 90 days prior to allow for sea/air cargo transit scheduling.

Do you accept wholesale bulk orders and what is the discount structure?

Yes. We are a DPIIT-recognised, DGFT-licensed exporter (IEC AAJCD6094K) supplying eco-friendly Ganesh idols to seasonal retailers, corporate gift buyers and international traders. The minimum order quantity (MOQ) for wholesale rates is 50 units, and we offer custom container-load pricing for export to our listed markets. Visit our Wholesale & Export page to submit a cargo inquiry or request our PDF catalogue.

Corporate Gifting, Idol Care & Pricing

Do you offer corporate gifting or custom-branded Ganesha idols?

Yes. We specialise in eco-friendly corporate gifting for festivals, employee appreciation, and CSR initiatives. We can co-brand the wooden base or packaging with your company logo or message, and provide elegant gift-ready boxes. Custom orders typically need 4–6 weeks of lead time, so we recommend reaching out well before Ganesh Chaturthi or Diwali. Email [email protected] with your quantity, preferred material, and event date for a tailored quote.

What is your cancellation and modification policy?

Bookings can be cancelled within 24 hours of confirmation for a full refund. After 24 hours but before production begins, cancellations may be subject to a processing fee depending on materials already prepared. Once production has started — especially for custom sizes, mandap idols, or export consignments — bookings cannot be cancelled, as every piece is handcrafted to order. Size and design modifications are accommodated free of cost if requested before the moulding stage.

How should I store my eco-friendly idol before the puja?

Keep the idol in its original packaging, in a cool and dry indoor space, away from direct sunlight, moisture, or air-conditioner drafts. Avoid stacking heavy items on top. Because our idols use natural pulp and clay, prolonged humidity can soften them — so do not store them in bathrooms, basements, or near open windows during monsoon. If you receive the idol weeks before the festival, unpack and inspect within 48 hours of delivery and contact us if you spot any transit issue.

Why are eco-friendly Ganpati idols priced higher than regular PoP idols?

Eco-friendly idols require specialised natural raw materials — Konkan riverbed Shadu clay, upcycled paper cellulose, organic pigments, and tapioca-starch binders — plus 14–21 days of slow shade drying, all hand-finished by skilled artisans. Mass-produced Plaster of Paris idols skip every one of those steps and use chemical paints. When you book a Devta idol, you are also paying fair wages to rural sculptors in Sion, Mahul, and Alibaug, and funding a government-recognised green manufacturing model. The price reflects authentic handcraft and environmental responsibility — not just material cost.
