Shadu Mati
Ganesh Idols

A Shadu Mati Ganpati is a Ganesh idol hand-sculpted from natural, unbaked riverbed clay (शाडू माती) sourced from the Konkan region. Devta's idols use no Plaster of Paris (PoP), gypsum, or polymer binders and are finished with water-soluble natural pigments such as turmeric, multani mitti, and red geru — so the idol dissolves back into silt during home immersion. The current Shadu Mati range runs 6 to 10 inches, ideal for home puja altars and apartments.

Each idol is hand-sculpted by Devta's master clay sculptors at the Alibaug coastal workshop and slow shade-dried for 14 to 21 days, with no industrial ovens. For sizes above 12 inches, the lighter Shadu-Paper Mix and Paper Lagda ranges are recommended.

Key Care Guidelines

🌡️

Store in Dry Shadows

Unbaked natural clay is highly sensitive to moisture. Keep the idol in its shipping box in a cool, dry place until the puja day.

👐

Handle by the Base Only

Always lift the idol supporting the wooden or clay base block. Avoid lifting by the trunk or limbs which are delicate.

🪣

Home Bucket Visarjan

Immerse Bappa in a clean water tub on your balcony. Per Devta's brochure, a 6–12 inch idol returns to silt in roughly 2 hours; larger or thicker idols take longer. See our eco visarjan guide.

A Blessed Bond with Mother Earth

Shadu Mati idols are made from natural clay, which in Hindu tradition symbolises the physical elements of the body. Worshipping a clay Ganesha lets devotees keep the cycle of earth-to-earth: the idol is shaped from soil and, at visarjan, returns to it.

Because Devta uses water-soluble natural pigments — turmeric (haldi), red geru, multani mitti and charcoal extract — instead of synthetic acrylic paints, the immersion water carries no chemical-paint residue. Need a lighter idol for transit or a high-rise?

For high-rise homes or long-distance shipping, the Shadu-Paper Mix reinforces pure clay with upcycled organic paper fibre — about 50% lighter than pure clay (brochure) and more crack-resistant. For the largest sizes, see the Paper Lagda range.

Shadu Mati Ganpati FAQs

Common questions from devotees booking natural clay idols.

What is a Shadu Mati Ganpati?
A Shadu Mati Ganpati is a Ganesh idol hand-sculpted from Shadu Mati (शाडू माती) — natural, unbaked riverbed clay sourced from the Konkan region of Western India. It contains no Plaster of Paris (PoP), gypsum binders, or synthetic polymers, so it dissolves back into natural silt during home immersion.
Is Shadu clay different from Plaster of Paris (PoP)?
Yes. Plaster of Paris (PoP) is a synthetic gypsum compound (calcium sulfate hemihydrate) that is non-biodegradable and can persist in water bodies for a long time. Shadu Mati is 100% natural river-silt clay; Devta uses no PoP, gypsum, or polymer binders, so the idol dissolves in water at home rather than releasing synthetic residue.
How long does a Shadu Mati idol take to dissolve at home?
Devta's brochure states that a standard 6-to-12-inch Shadu Mati idol dissolves in a home water tub in approximately two hours. Because the clay is unbaked and free of polymers and gypsum binders, it returns to natural silt. Actual time varies with idol size, wall thickness, and the volume of water used.
Why are pure Shadu Mati idols usually small (under 12 inches)?
Natural unbaked clay is dense and heavy — a 2-foot pure-clay idol can exceed 30 kg and becomes brittle, developing structural cracks during shade-drying or transport. Devta's current Shadu Mati catalogue runs 6 to 10 inches; for 12-inch-plus sizes we recommend the lighter Paper Lagda range or the Shadu-Paper Mix.
Are the natural colors used on Devta clay idols safe?
Devta clay idols are painted using water-soluble natural pigments — turmeric (haldi), multani mitti (fuller's earth), charcoal extract, red geru (terracotta soil), and tapioca/plant starches. They contain no chemical paint thinners, lead-based paints, or synthetic chemical binders.
Do Shadu Mati idols develop cracks?
Pure Shadu clay shrinks slightly as it dries, which can cause fine surface micro-fissures. Devta slow shade-dries idols for 14 to 21 days to reduce cracking, and offers Shadu-Paper Mix options that reinforce the clay with upcycled paper fibre for larger, more crack-resistant idols.
